Colorado Children Are Struggling with Mental Health

SOL Mental Health can help!

We know mental health is just as important as physical health. Dealing with any kind of mental health issue can be extremely debilitating, making it hard to function in daily life, and that’s something we all need to recognize. Unfortunately, Colorado is one of the worst states for mental health, especially when it comes to kids. Luckily, there are ways to help with this. At SOL Mental Health, we are committed to improving mental health for children and adults alike. Read on to find out why our children are struggling, and how we can help.

Mental Health America, a nonprofit advocacy group, found that Colorado ranked number 43 of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., in their 2018 study in terms of mental health. A lower ranking means there is higher-level mental illness and less access to care.

When it comes to children, many in Colorado were shown to be dependent on drugs or alcohol. In fact, Colorado ranked in last place when it came to mental health for children. The Mental Health Colorado president at the time, Andrew Romanoff, said he believed kids were not being properly treated or even screened for these issues.

In more recent years, resources for kids’ mental health are continually declining. Residential beds and acute psychiatric beds for children are becoming less and less available. At times, kids have been staying in the Colorado Childrens’ Hospital for up to 6 months, having nowhere else to go to meet their long-term needs.

Reasons for these closures are due to many factors, including the effects of the pandemic and less funding. Colorado is working to make improvements by connecting mental and physical health more to one another and providing funding for additional beds. They are also set to launch a behavioral health administration early this July in order to aid with resources and funding.

At SOL Mental Health, we want to contribute to the positive changes being made in our community. We provide a wide range of mental health services for children and adolescents. This includes individual counseling, psychiatry services, psychological testing, and even yoga for mental health and wellness. We know treatment is not one size fits all, which is why we offer different types of services. We even offer online therapy and virtual counseling, so you don’t have to worry about transportation.

There is always hope, and we want you to remember that. We care about you and your health, and are here to help change the statistics for your children. We hope you will find us as a great resource for your family as we work toward improving mental health for children everywhere!
